Role Summary
- You will help decide on rules for barristers in England and Wales.
- The work is for the Independent Decision-Making Body, called IDB.
- IDB makes important decisions on barristers' conduct and business.
- You will be a barrister member or a lay member (not a lawyer).
Key Tasks
- Attend and prepare for panel meetings to review cases.
- Decide if rules were broken and what actions to take.
- Take part in training to learn new rules and updates.
- Sometimes act as panel secretary, helping with writing and organizing.
Skills And Experience
- Barristers must be practising or have practised in last 3 years.
- Lay members must not be barristers or solicitors.
- Good reading, writing, and decision-making skills are needed.
- Training will be given, but you should be ready to learn.
Pay And Hours
- You will be paid £330 a day or £165 a half day for most work.
- Panel meetings pay £430 a day or £215 a half day for extra reading time.
- Panel chair gets an extra £100 a day or £50 a half day.
- Panel secretaries get £750 a day.
- Appointments last up to 4 years, with a possible 4-year extension.
Location And Workplace
- You can live anywhere; meetings can be remote.
- Training is in London twice a year and you should attend in person.
- Reasonable travel costs for training will be paid.
